AmeriCorps*VISTA Summer Position: IBM Lego Robotics Camp Counselor
The Summer VISTA at Essex CHIPS will serve from June 15 – August 15, 2012 and will assist in the logistical planning, program delivery, and enhancement of the curriculum for our IBM/WFD Science, Engineering, and Technology (S.E.T.) summer camp for 6th – 8th graders. There will be two different two-week sessions of the camp, with each session serving 25 students. Half of the camp day will consist of learning/problem-solving around principals of physics, design, and computer programming using the “Lego Mindstorm” kits. Students will gain experience working both independently and in small groups. Additionally, students will participate in a variety of fun summer camp activities (swimming, outdoor games, etc.) with their fellow campers. The Summer VISTA will (in addition to working on enhancing our delivery of the Lego Mindstorms curriculum) support the development and implementation of fun and experiential activities for the youth in our program.

Stomping Ground Youth Outreach Coordinator:
Essex CHIPS is looking for energetic and committed student leaders to continue our legacy of offering substance free events through our youth lead business, The Stomping Ground.
So, what is The Stomping Ground, you ask?
Since 2005 the Stomping Grounds has set out to provide a place where high school aged youth can display their talents and enjoy the company of their peers in a safe and healthy environment, while also strengthening their sense of community.
At the Stomping Ground, High School students take advantage of unique atmosphere where they can showcase their talents in the presence of other supporting students. We aim to attract students of all different social groups from athletes, to artists, to musicians.
We host a wide variety of events from “Open Mic Nights” to Holiday Dances where there is a substance free environment and familiarity, comfort, and enjoyment.
What are the requirements?
The Stomping Ground staff is responsible for organizing substance-free events for high school youth (and sometimes adults!) in the greater Essex area. The Youth Outreach Coordinators gain ongoing job skills training from community volunteers and tangible professional experience that will set them up for college admission and future professional positions.
· Attend weekly Stomping Ground event planning meeting
· Attend weekly office hours to plan, organize and execute tasks.
· Work Friday night events at least once a month
· Serve as a positive role model for peers and the general community.
·Be at least 16 years of age (this is the law, unfortunately). If you are interested in The Stomping Ground and you are not 16- get in touch, we you can still volunteer with us!
